Dead Until Dark is the first book in the Southern Vampire Mysteries series. It was published on May 1, 2001 and introduces Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic barmaid, and a world of supernatural beings. In Dead Until Dark, Sookie begins a relationship with Bill Compton, a vampire, and is faced with the new reality of her quiet small town becoming prey to a vampire-hating serial killer. This book was the basis of season 1 of the HBO show True Blood.
